Vote Victoria Ugwoeme for Shirley

It’s been great talking to residents across Shirley. I pledge to work hard for everyone – promoting green spaces, tackling anti-social behaviour, and supporting residents who are feeling the pressure.
I believe that Southampton is a place that everyone can thrive in and I will do everything I can to ensure that remains true.
A vote for me is a vote for an experienced candidate who will hit the ground running. I’ll continue the great work already started by our Labour councillors Alice and Alex, such as securing improved bus services for Hill Lane, and maintaining and improving our award-winning local parks.
I know that a Councillor only works effectively when embedded in a community and pledge to engage with residents and community groups not just at election time but all year round. If you see me out and about, please do come say hello!
– Victoria Ugwoeme
Labour candidate
Shirley Labour are out all-year round
Unlike the other parties, Labour’s team care about Shirley all-year round and are out talking to residents throughout the year. While knocking on doors, we hear all about the concerns that local residents have and you’ve told us that things like child poverty, the levels of crime and the local environment are your priorities.
Shirley’s councillors and Labour’s candidate for Shirley share these concerns. Your candidate Victoria has taken steps to address food poverty in the city by setting up food banks and activity clubs for children during the holidays.
When it comes to crime, successive Tory governments originally supported by the Liberal Democrats, have cut police services across the country. This has meant that in Southampton we have seen increases in the level of crime in our local neighbourhoods.
In contrast to the Tory governments of the last 14 years, the new Labour government is committed to taking back our streets from crime by cracking down on antisocial behaviour, delivering more neighbourhood police and introducing tough new penalties for offenders.
In Shirley we are lucky to have a hard-working local bobby, Adam Whittaker. He can be contacted by Shirley residents with any concerns about crime in the local area:

Making our green spaces even better
Public green spaces are vital to Southampton and Shirley and we can be proud of the parks in our area. These cherished spaces provide safe environments for people to relax in and children to play in, but we can always do more to care for them. Our Shirley Labour team work hard all year round to ensure overgrowth is cleared, pathways are improved, seating is renewed and wildlife can thrive.
In Shirley we have the wonderful St James’ Park, which received the Green Flag award in 2022, and your local Labour Councillors will continue to support our green spaces. This includes advocating for improvements to the much loved Shirley Pond Park.
Planned work in Shirley Pond Park will result in safer and cleaner paths, additional benches and more accessible gates for prams and wheelchair users. Surveys are being organised as part of the Council’s park improvement plan to dredge the pond.
Alex, Alice and Victoria would like to thank Friends of Shirley Pond Park for their ongoing commitment to make this a nicer and safer park for all to enjoy. Shirley Labour Councillors attend regular litter picks organised by this group, took part in the spring re-painting of the park shelter, and got involved with the community at Shirley’s Big Green Carnival this summer.
Local councillors will continue to push for the much needed improvements to make Shirley Pond Park a better space for all to use.
