The Southampton Labour administration has delivered a major win for Southampton’s communities and environment by securing the future of the much-loved Woodmill Outdoor Activities Centre. A successful joint bid by Southampton City Scouts and Southern Water, approved by Cabinet this week, ensures this leisure site will remain open, active, and accessible for generations to come.
Cllr Kataria, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “Labour recognised the value of Woodmill from day one, not only as a hub for sports unique to Southampton location and outdoor leisure, but also as a destination that supports the local economy. By backing this joint bid, we’ve safeguarded access to vital activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, and bushcraft, particularly for young people, schools, and community groups. This supports our Leisure Strategy and commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.”
The bid also delivers major environmental improvements. Southern Water will invest millions to restore the Salmon Pool stretch of the River Itchen, repairing collapsing banks, upgrading sluice gates, and creating a new fish passage, addressing issues identified by the Environment Agency.
Cllr Savage, Cabinet Member for Green City, said “This Labour administration will ensure that Southern Water act on these commitments and we are looking to have Southern Water sign a Conservation Covenant with Natural England to guarantee delivery of proposed restoration measures. Yes, the land may leave Council ownership — but with strong covenants and legal agreements, the river’s future can be brighter than ever. I’ll keep fighting to make sure our environment gets the protection it deserves.”
This joint bid has been backed by Natural England, the Environment Agency, and Wildlife Trusts. This outcome reflects Labour’s vision of a city where no one is left behind, creating opportunities, investing in young people, and delivering long-term community and environmental benefits through strong leadership and partnership.
